No this is not a tawdry post. Actually, it’s a very practical one. Have you ever used pantyhose in your garden? Or maybe a T-shirt? What am I talking about? Let me tell you….

Plant Supports.

Have you ever gotten a tree from a nursery that is attached to a stick to hold it upright? Or seen trees supported on 3 sides after they are planted? Well if you leave those ties on too long it can girdle the tree. That means it can cut into the bark or even have the bark grow right around it. In both cases, it can hurt the plant. And it’s the same in the vegetable garden. If you are trying to stake up your tomato plants to keep the fruit off the ground or keep your peppers from breaking in the wind, you need to use something to tie them up.

What To Use For Plant Supports.

Whether you use a Trellis, plant stakes, or a chain-link fence, you need some way to attach your plants to it. There are many things you can use to tie up your plants. Most of them are plastic. Most don’t stretch very well. And most of them you will have to pay for. But today I’m here to tell you of something that won’t cost you a thing and will work far better than most of the gizmos on the market. That’s where pantyhose comes in.

How To Use Clothing For Plant Ties.

Yep, you got that right, you can use pantyhose to tie up your plants. But not just pantyhose. You can use T-shirts or old stretchy nighties or any stretchy material. I’ve even heard of people using old underwear. Just as long as it’s stretchy. (and clean might be nice)

How Do You Use The Material?

Very simply, you cut the material to the size you need, wrap it around the stem, trunk, or branch, and tie it to the fence or support. You can tie up individual stems of your tomato plant or you can help train a newly planted bush to stand up straight. You can even cut a large piece to support vining fruits and vegetables so they will grow vertically, just like I did this pumpkin. The vines will support themselves. But the pumpkins or melons will get too heavy for the vine and break off. With a sling made out of pantyhose or a T-shirt, the fruit will stay on the vine until you pick it. I’ve grown many fruits and vegetables this way. It prevents rot and bugs from damaging your produce like they would if it were sitting on the ground.

Recycle Old Clothes.
